Composting

Do you have a yard pile that needs some straightening out? Or maybe you already compost but you find your current system a hassle? Or maybe you'd just like to get some ideas and tools for reducing the amount of biodegradable waste you're throwing away? Let us help you turn your food scraps and yard waste into rich, nutritious soil for your yard!

Don't give away your valuable yard waste! Save it and mix it with heavier food waste for great results!

Need a bin? We can deliver and install any one you like!

No rats! All compost bins we offer are pest-resistant. If a pest problem is keeping you from composting, we can help to remedy the situation.

Want to start composting but aren't keen on having a dirty ice cream pail attracting flies on the kitchen counter? We offer a variety of attractive, odour and bug resistant pails and biodegradable bags.

We also offer hand screening of finished compost. This may or may not be necessary depending on the condition of the compost and the intended use (for potting or as topdressing for a lawn, compost should be screened first)

Finished soil can be put in any kind of bin or set aside on the yard and covered with plastic sheeting.

Materials

We deal with the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre as a supplier of our composting materials. They are a non-profit business who provide composting and organic gardening education to CRD residents. If you don't have your own materials (bins, accessories, etc) and would like us to deliver them for you, visit the GVCEC store here:

Here are the other materials we offer that aren't sold through the GVCEC:

Value Bin (not as sturdy or efficient as the GVCEC ones but will do the job) - $60

Compost Accelerator - $10 per box

Designer Kitchen Waste Pails (available in Stainless Steel, Bamboo. White and Black Ceramic) - Supplied by The Good Planet Company - $50-$65

Storage bins for finished soil. Price varies but generally the bigger the bin the more expensive. - $30-$100

Services

In addition to providing full scale planning and preparing compost systems, here are some individual services we can provide:

Aerating

Existing compost (in bin or heap) is manually loosened up with a tool to improve air flow and slightly mix it to aid digestion. Adding compost accelerator optional. Should be done on a regular basis.

Filling bins/Making heaps

A typical process using materials on site would be to separate and chop up yard waste, mix in with food scraps, grass clippings, leaves etc., add compost accelerator and fill a bin or make a proper heap.

Advice!

If you'd just like some help to plan things out or whatever else we can help you.

Chipping/Mulching Larger Yard Waste

Although it may be best to just remove certain things, we can arrange to have larger materials processed and worked into compost or mulch into gardens and landscaping.

Screening and spreading or storing finished compost

We can work the finished compost into existing garden beds, use it to topdress/fertilize your lawn, or store it in bins or covered up off to the side somewhere.
